Introduction by dmorista: Today May 4th, 2024 marks 54 years since a force of National Guardsmen deployed, carrying rifles loaded with live ammunition, on the campus of Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. They opened fire killing 4 people and wounding 9. This film clip in Item 1)., “Film Clip from Documentary”, included here shows from 1:30 – 2:18 that the police commander threatened to open fire again if the crowd did not disperse; and a Geology Professor pleaded with the students to leave before the guardsmen fired on them again. The video also notes, from 2:50 – 2:56 that one poll found that 58% of the respondents thought the killings were “justified”. And the video notes from 3:01 – 3:15 that parents of one of the students killed, William Schroeder a ROTC member, received huge amounts of hate mail about the death of their son from right-wing extremists.

Item 2)., “Song Ohio”, was written by Neil Young (a Canadian btw) and recorded with alacrity by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. They managed to get the song into record stores by May 14th, 1970 a major feat in those days. Of course the next day May 15th, 1970 police in Jackson Mississippi, killed two students and charged into a women's dormitory chasing protesters. They fired hundreds of rounds into that dormitory. Anti-War protesters (myself included) wanted to make sure that we always commemorate these two barbaric acts of our ruling class together. Whether or not Neil Young would have worked the killings at Jackson State into the lyrics of Ohio I don't know.
