The prime minister of Poland stood up in his parliament on Thursday and told his country that Russia is planning to attack NATO territory in the next few months, and most of North America spent the day arguing about something else.
Tusk Told Poland to Get Ready for an Attack
Donald Tusk doesn’t do theatre. He called it the most likely scenario for the coming months and told Poles they need to be mentally ready for tests coming for every one of them. Then he described it. Russian drones or rockets come down on one or more countries on NATO’s eastern flank. They destroy things. Maybe they kill people. And Moscow puts on its innocent face and says, "Oops." His words: “The official narration will be that it’s an accident,” so NATO has no reason to respond.

That’s the play. Kill people inside the alliance, deny it, and watch 32 governments argue about whether it counts.
Tusk even told them what Putin is after. He wants to convince NATO members that “Article 5 is more theoretical than practical.” Once that idea takes hold, the alliance is a letterhead. Every small country on Russia’s border is on its own, and they all know it.
This isn’t Tusk freelancing. He says the intelligence is coming from NATO, from Ukraine, from the Americans, the CIA included, and that it all lines up. Poland’s border crossings with Ukraine got hit four times in the past week. Russia has switched to jet-powered drones that fly higher and faster and get past air defence more easily. He expects six major Ukrainian cities to be pounded nonstop this winter, with the rail lines and supply depots going first so nobody can help them. And months ago this same man said Europe should be ready for a major conflict with Russia by 2027. That’s January. We’re in the back half of September.
Macron Took France’s Leaders Into a Bunker
Less than 24 hours later, Emmanuel Macron hauled every party leader in France into a secure crisis room under the Élysée, sat them across from his intelligence and military chiefs for three hours, and came out to tell the country that the Russian threat to France has intensified and the risk of physical attacks on French soil is real. He’s ordered a national plan to protect critical infrastructure and defence plants from drones and cyberattacks. You don’t do that for a press cycle. You do that because somebody showed you something in that room.
Then he talked about Leipzig, which should have been front-page news on this continent for a week and wasn’t.
On the night of August 4, a drone packed with plastic explosive, reportedly Semtex, flew at a Ukrainian An-124 cargo jet parked at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany. It hit the plane and bounced off. It didn’t detonate because the trigger had come disconnected. That is the only reason. Germany formally blamed Russia on September 1, and investigators have traced the planning to a GRU officer. Macron told reporters flat out that it failed because the Russian device malfunctioned, that people would have died, and that it can happen in any European city.
So understand what that means. Russian military intelligence attempted a bombing at a major airport inside a NATO country six weeks ago, and the difference between that and a war is a loose wire.
Robert Fico Just Answered Putin’s Question for Him
Now meet Robert Fico.
The same day as Tusk’s speech, Slovakia’s prime minister told a room in Prešov that he doesn’t want his country in a conflict “because of some Article 5.” Some Article 5. Like it’s a parking bylaw. He said he’ll do everything in his power to keep Slovakia out of any armed conflict, asked who in their right mind would send 5,000 or 10,000 Slovak soldiers off to fight, and accused the rest of Europe of looking for an excuse to start a war with Russia. He never once called Russia the aggressor. He posted it on Facebook so nobody in Moscow would miss it.
Tusk warned Thursday morning that Putin’s whole strategy is to find out whether allies will actually show up. By Thursday afternoon a sitting NATO prime minister, one of the few who flew to Moscow to shake Putin’s hand during this war, has answered the question for him. Putin doesn’t have to probe Slovakia. Slovakia sent him the results.
Meanwhile, German and Dutch Patriot batteries have been parked in eastern Slovakia since 2022, and allied jets patrol its skies. Fico will take every bit of that protection. He just won’t return it. And NATO runs on consensus, so one guy like that at the table when the drones land is all Moscow needs.
Putin Couldn’t Ask for a Better Moment
Look at what else Putin sees from his window right now. Diesel in France at €2.35 a litre and the government terrified of another yellow vest uprising. A French president with months left and no majority. Hormuz shut, the Red Sea choking, Europe heading into winter short on fuel. A White House that treats the alliance like a bill collector. If you were going to take a swing at NATO, you’d have a hard time picking a better moment, and the people whose job is to know these things are telling us he’s picked it.
Canadians, this one’s ours too. We lead the NATO brigade in Latvia. Those are our people standing on the exact stretch of map Tusk was describing. If a “stray” Russian missile lands on the eastern flank this winter, there’s a decent chance a Canadian is underneath it, and then we find out in real time whether Article 5 means anything.
They’re Telling You What’s Coming
Mark Rutte stood beside Tusk in Warsaw this spring and promised that an attack on any ally would bring a response he described as “devastating.” I hope so. But hope isn’t a defence policy, and the leaders closest to the blast radius have stopped talking in hypotheticals. Tusk said, “Get Ready.” Macron went into a bunker and came out with a protection plan. They are telling you what’s coming as plainly as politicians ever do. The least we can do is hear it.
