Trump is now conditioning supporters to equate core democratic beliefs with communism, recasting elections, immigration, and political opposition as threats to be quickly eradicated.

Renato Guttuso (1911-1987) The Prisoner (Il Prigioniero), c. 1940s. Painted during Fascist Italy, The Prisoner depicts the imprisonment of political opponents and the machinery of state repression. Guttuso transforms a single captive into an enduring indictment of authoritarian rule and the destruction of political liberty.

Trump deliberately rebranded the machinery of democracy as communism: voting, immigrating, winning elections. Nazi Germany, Stalin’s Soviet Union, and Mao’s China acted on that label through mass killing. Extermination began each time with this identical groundwork, and Trump has finished the preparation.

In 1933, Germany placed a national election inside an emergency anti-communist decree, and a one-party state followed within five months. Over the last 48 hours, Trump named a “communist menace” and Patriot Front marched on the Capitol unpunished. A pending Senate bill would fix Election Day 2026 inside a permanent Anti-Communism Week.

On July 4th, NPR reported, Trump likened communism to a cancer that must be cut out.

ON July 3rd, President Donald Trump promised to “send them into exile” from Mount Rushmore. The targets, by the president’s definition, span immigrants, criminals, and people who refuse work, all labeled communists. Twelve hours after that definition, 400 masked white nationalists marched on the Capitol, and police made zero arrests.

While Patriot Front marched, Senate Bill 3244 remained before Congress, designating November 2nd through 8th as Anti-Communism Week. Election Day, November 3rd, falls within that period. A presidential promise, an expanded definition of communism, a white nationalist march, and federal legislation converged within seven days.

The infrastructure already operates in public view. ICE pursues arrest quotas in the thousands while the military devoted seven hours of July 4th to ceremonial displays under presidential command.

Every ground campaign requires a message, a machine, and a deadline. Trump assembled all three across America’s 250th anniversary weekend. He cast communists as an internal enemy, paired election legislation with street intimidation that police allowed to proceed, and fixed the deadline on the November midterms, claiming Republicans lose only through foolishness before promising a century of victories once the SAVE America Act passes.

Across two speeches, Trump escalated the rhetoric, opening with “a resurgence of the communist menace in our land.” From Mount Rushmore, he ranked communism above World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, and September 11th, calling it “a mortal threat to American liberty” and declaring communists and patriots “cannot be both.” The speeches and march created campaign infrastructure, not holiday ceremony.

Trump then urged Senate Republicans to end the filibuster and pass the SAVE America Act. The following night on the National Mall, he pledged to end most mail-in voting, exempting only illness, disability, military deployment, and travel.

Congress supplied the legislative companion. Representative María Elvira Salazar introduced the Anti-Communism Week Act in January 2026, converting last November’s presidential proclamation into permanent federal law, with the Senate version fixing November 2nd through 8th each year. The Act identifies “democratic socialism” as a repackaged deception, while the companion Crucial Communism Teaching Act mandates anti-communist instruction in high schools.

Germany adopted a comparable legal framework in 1933, and the chronology deserves attention. President Paul von Hindenburg signed the Reichstag Fire Decree on February 28th, suspending civil liberties after an alleged communist uprising. Germans voted six days later. Before ballots opened, police arrested roughly 4,000 Communist Party members.

If Congress enacts a permanent Anti-Communism Week, Election Day would fall within the federal observance. The overlap would place alleged communists under heightened political scrutiny immediately before Americans vote, echoing the chronology Germany followed in 1933.

German authorities shuttered opposition newspapers, barred elected Communist deputies from taking their seats, and passed the Enabling Act on March 23rd while police detention kept opposition legislators absent. Within five months, Germany had become a one-party state.

American law already provides a comparable legal mechanism. Federal immigration statutes bar Communist Party members from admission and naturalization, and Trump has called for removing left-wing political figures and certain undocumented immigrants. The exile pledge, therefore, relies on existing legal authority rather than new legislation.

Congress funded that authority. Lawmakers appropriated $45 billion for detention construction, increasing ICE’s detention budget 265 percent and expanding capacity to 116,000 daily detainees. Twenty-three reviewed warehouses add 80,000 beds, while the Navy raised the WEXMAC TITUS contract ceiling from $10 billion to $55 billion.

WEXMAC documents include biohazard incinerator protocols, provisions epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding called “extra chilling.” Published detention standards do not address body-handling procedures, and Homeland Security has not disclosed how officials handle detainees who die in custody.

The removal targets match the hardware. Stephen Miller demanded 3,000 immigration arrests every day. One million deportations per year stands as the White House goal. Officers arrested over 10,000 people in five days of late June 2026. That pace doubles the roughly 1,000 daily arrests of early 2026.

Historians classify exile language as eliminationist rhetoric because leaders have repeatedly used it before political repression. Doctors reserve eradicate for the permanent elimination of disease. Applied to politics, the word shifts the objective from defeating opponents to removing them from national life.

Nazi leaders spoke of rooting out Jews and political enemies. Mao Zedong ordered campaigns against hidden counterrevolutionaries. Joseph Stalin purged so-called enemies of the people through show trials. Each regime portrayed targeted groups as threats to national survival rather than legitimate opposition. Historians draw their warning from that recurring pattern.

American officials built a domestic counterpart. President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9835 in March 1947, placing three million federal workers under loyalty screening. Senator Joseph McCarthy expanded the campaign at Wheeling on February 9th, 1950, falsely claiming a list of 205 State Department communists.

McCarthy’s State Department list never existed, yet loyalty boards interrogated clerks, studios blacklisted screenwriters, and universities dismissed faculty. Historian Richard Hofstadter called the method “the paranoid style,” politics driven by invisible conspiracies. McCarthy targeted officials; Trump targets voters, immigrants, and winning Democratic primary candidates in New York, Colorado, and Texas.

Twelve hours after Mount Rushmore, the rhetoric reached the streets. Patriot Front marched 400 masked members from Union Station to Eastern Market, carrying Confederate flags while police stood aside.

Thomas Rousseau founded Patriot Front eighteen days after the Charlottesville rally that killed Heather Heyer. He adopted the fasces, Mussolini’s party symbol, recolored red, white, and blue. Patriot Front advocates a white ethnostate, generated four-fifths of 2021 white supremacist propaganda, and owes Charles Murrel III $2.7 million for a racist assault.

Police recovered shields and a smoke grenade, but no firearms, at the 2022 Coeur d’Alene arrests, so charges stayed misdemeanors. Sixteen months into Kash Patel’s FBI tenure, Patriot Front marched again in Washington.

Historian Robert Paxton argued in The Anatomy of Fascism that fascist movements gain power when conservative elites decide street organizations serve elite interests. Italian authorities reached that decision in October 1922 and empowered Mussolini’s Blackshirts.

Hannah Arendt agreed in The Origins of Totalitarianism: parties need voters, while movements need a named enemy and visible soldiers. Trump and Patriot Front supplied both within a single news cycle.

Historians identify six recurring steps between enemy naming and eradication. The scorecard below dates Trump’s progress.

**THE SIX STEPS FROM NAMING AN ENEMY TO REMOVING ONE**

✓ **Step 1 — Name the internal enemy.** Completed July 3rd–4th, 2026. Trump declared a “communist menace” from Mount Rushmore and the National Mall.

✓ **Step 2 — Expand the definition to ordinary opponents.** Completed July 3rd, 2026. Trump indicted voters, immigrants, and winning Democratic primary candidates.

◻ **Step 3 — Restrict participation by law.** Pending. The SAVE America Act and the Anti-Communism Week Act sit before Congress.

✓ **Step 4 — Tolerate aligned street formations.** Completed July 4th, 2026. Four hundred masked Patriot Front members marched on the Capitol, and police made zero arrests.

✓ **Step 5 — Discredit the observers.** Completed December 2023 through March 2025. Elon Musk and Joe Rogan branded the marchers federal agents.

◻ **Step 6 — Remove the target population.** Promised July 3rd, 2026, and funded. “Send them into exile.”

The scorecard shows four steps complete, step three pending, and step six promised.

“The wrongs which we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant, and so devastating, that civilization cannot afford their being repeated.”— Justice Robert H. Jackson, chief American prosecutor, opening the Nuremberg trials, November 21st, 1945

Every society believed repression would stop short of eradication. History recorded a different ending. The United States now approaches the same threshold.

The work continues.
