A white visitor to the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 My friends, a quick (for me) reflection (time today is short)… Neo-Confederate and neo-Jim Crow white supremacism is both a critical ingredient and a tool of the Amerikaner fascism that the Trump regime is trying to ram down the throat of the United States. It’s what’s behind: · The placement of an open white nationalist and Christian fascist, Pete Hegseth, atop the Department of Defense. Hegseth belongs to a far-right Christian sect whose leader heralds the time of Black chattel slavery as a positive period in US race relations. · The removal of the Black general Charles Brown from his former position as head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff atop the different US military branches. · Hegseth’s absurd claim that “DEI generals” are “hunting around for racists in our ranks they know do not exist” (there are plenty of racists in US military, including the Secretary of Defense). · Hegseth’s order of a review of military standards on beards that “primarily impacts Black troops, who are commonly exempt from standard shaving requirements due to a skin condition (pseudofolliculitis barbae) which afflicts 45% of Black servicemen” (according to the radical US veteran Mike Prysner). · The renaming of US military bases after generals of the slaveowners’ Confederacy, the coalition government of southern states that seceded from the United States and fought a Civil War against the “free labor” North in defense of the system of Black chattel slavery. · A sweeping purge of articles about and other references to soldiers of color on Department of Defense websites. Among those digitally whitewashed are the members of the heroic 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, an all-Black unit that fought to free southern Blacks during the Civil War – this as the Confederacy carried out a policy of executing Black war prisoners. · The placement of white nationalist fascists (including Charlie Kirk and the disgraced former General Michael Flynn) on military academy boards. · Banning Black History Month activities in the US military. · Banning Black student groups at military academies. · Trump’s absurd offer of US residence and legal status to wealthy supposed (mythical) white Afrikaner victims of Black South African “racism” – a remarkable move as he orders mass deportations of nonwhite immigrants he has accused of “poisoning our [white] blood.” · Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s literal expulsion from the US of South Africa’s Black ambassador to the US last after Rubio learned from a white nationalist journal (Breitbart) that the ambassador had likened Trump’s white Amerikaner politics to those of the racist white apartheid fascist Afrikaner regime (imagine) that ruled South Africa for most of the last century. As if all this isn’t bad enough, Trump’s General Service Administration (GSA) has channeled the ghosts of Jim Crow by dropping a long-standing Civil Rights era clause prohibiting government contractors from maintaining or using racially segregated facilities. Deborah Archer, president of the American Civil Liberties Union, told The Washington Post that this action lacks “legal effect” because of the 1964 Civil Rights Act but is highly significant nonetheless: “Even presidents who were hostile to the civil rights agenda at least understood that they shouldn’t say it out loud.. To have a President embrace a segregationist agenda is both dangerous and heartbreaking.” The racial purging in the US military under the white supremacists Trump and Hegseth is both a reflection of pre-existing US racism-fascism and part of the project of advancing the ongoing and accelerating fascist coup here in the world’s most dangerous and powerful nation. The Trump fascist regime is one month away from potentially deciding – on Hitler’s birthday (April 20th) – to invoke the Insurrection Act, effectively declaring martial law in the United States. The Republifascist white nationalist complex is certainly aware that Black and other nonwhite soldiers are disproportionately represented in the military ranks and that many of these nonwhite (and some white) troops will resist orders to enforce the fundamentally white supremacist agenda of the fascist dictatorship that the Trump regime is trying to impose in the “homeland.” |
