Data, findings

As of today, Israeli military operations have displaced 3 million people across Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon since October 2023.

That’s according to the data I’ve been collecting/monitoring from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the International Organization for Migration. The displacement figures for Gaza and the West Bank refer to internally displaced persons (IDPs). IDPs and cross-border displacements are included for Lebanon.

I monitored IDP and refugee flows in Syria when I worked in the humanitarian sector. Last time I checked, just over 50 percent of that country’s population was displaced. In Gaza, 90 percent of the population is.

In Lebanon, 112,545 people had been internally displaced by Israeli attacks by this time last month. Now there are 689,715 IDPs in Lebanon, plus another 392,076 Lebanese and Syrian people who have fled the country since Israel’s major escalation on September 23.

The numbers for the West Bank aren’t as staggering as the numbers I just mentioned, but they’re still staggering. Especially considering that Israeli settlers account for more than 26 percent of the displacements there. (The rest: Israeli government’s demolitions and military operations.)

A breakdown of these displacements is provided in the table below. I also included casualty data because you were probably wondering about that too.

I wouldn’t expect Kamala Harris or anyone else to have memorized all the horrifying figures visualized below, but I’m near certain the vice president’s estimates would be pretty close.

Which is why I was particularly haunted by something she said during her recent media blitz. This week, Harris was asked the following question on The View:

“Would you have done something differently from President Biden during the past four years?”

Generously afforded the privilege of hindsight, Harris responded to this softball question with, “There is not a thing that comes to mind.”

Considering all the death and displacement caused by Biden’s Israel policy over the past year, that’s not just the worst thing I’ve heard Harris say, it’s one of the worst things I’ve heard anyone say.
