Introductionby dmorista: In Item 1)., “Watch Dana Bash’s full interview ….”, Bash did a creditable job in interviewing J. D. Vance and challenging his frequently posted false statements and assertionps. The entire interview is worth watching, Bash and Vance spar over the background to the bomb threats and evacuations in Springfield, Ohio with the first round more-or-less contained from 0:00 to 4:29. The controversy over the death of 11 year old Aidan Clark that occurred when his school bus was involved in a traffic accident with a car driven by a Haitian Immigrant, that both Vance and Trump have repeatedly called a “Murder”, is addressed from about 8:06 – 8:58. From about 8:27 – 8:52 Aidan's father, speaking at a Springfield City Council meeting, criticizes the political use of his son's death by Vance and other Republican Politicians. Vance blathers the usual “thoughts and prayers” B.S., always laid out by faux Christian Rethug politicians, from about 8:58 to 9:20. Finally from about 10:54 – 11:30 Vance talks about the “murders supposedly caused by Harris' immigration policies” and he makes the statement, that has become a meme saying, “If I have to create stories so that the American Media pays attention to the suffering of the American people then that's what I am going to do Dana”, in the interview from 11:00 – 11:25. All in all Bash did a creditable job of not letting Vance just make his lying statements without challenge.
Item 2)., “Vance defends casting Springfield ….”; Item 3)., “JD Vance admits 'creating stories' ….”; and Item 4)., “JD Vance says he does not regret ….” all look at the general situation in Springfield, including that the city had a declining population over past decades, but that now, according to Springfield Mayor Rob Rue from 12,000 – 15,000 Haitian immigrants have arrived in Springfield over the past 4 years, and he agrees that they are straining the small city's resources.
Looking at the demographic history of Springfield in the Table above we see a typical Rust Belt situation. Springfield grew rapidly and then held its population, that reached a peak of 82,273 in 1960 and held more-or-less steady at 81,926 in 1970. Then, as the U.S. ruling class began its decades long process of moving their industrial investments to low-wage / low-regulation countries, the population inside the city limits of Springfield began a nearly 50 trend of continually decreasing.
Just for the information of our readers, here is a location map for Springfield, Ohio; that lies more-or-less between Dayton and Columbus. It is located right in the heart of the deindustrialized zone, of what was once the largest and most productive industrial region on Earth, but certainly no longer.
What is clear is that the whole Cat-Eating Haitians meme is another attempt to distract American voters from the real issues, many of which are unfavorable to the Trump / Vance ticket. Certainly the Democratic Party is somewhat better than the horrific Fascist Rethugs are, but they are not the real answer.

Vance defends casting Springfield into national spotlight
“I’m still going to keep on talking about what the migrants have done to Springfield, Ohio,” the Ohio senator said.
Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance defended throwing Springfield, Ohio, into the national spotlight in a Sunday show sweep, amid bomb threats in the city and pleas from local officials to stop.
“I’m still going to keep on talking about what the migrants have done to Springfield, Ohio, and what Kamala Harris’ open border has done to Springfield, Ohio,” Vance said in an interview with host Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I’m talking to my constituents and I’m hearing terrible things about what’s going on in Springfield and Kamala Harris’ open border policies have caused these problems.”
Almost a week after the senator posted unverified claims of Haitians eating pets in Springfield, Ohio — inspiring former President Donald Trump to say “they’re eating the dogs” during Tuesday night’s debate — Vance continued to float the rumors that local and state officials say are false. Across three Sunday shows, Vance reiterated that he continues talking about the Haitian immigrants in Springfield because he said he has received dozens of complaints from constituents.
Local officials have asked politicians to stop demonizing Haitian immigrants in the Ohio city, especially as the national attention has brought bomb threats to local hospitals, schools and city hall, as well as led to the arrival of white supremacists.
“There’s a lot of garbage on the internet,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in an interview with ABC’s “This Week. “This is a piece of garbage that was simply not true. There’s no evidence of this at all.”
DeWine also stated that the Haitian immigrants in Springfield are there legally.
And on Friday, Springfield Mayor Rob Rue cast the blame for bomb threats on national leaders talking about it: “All these federal politicians that have negatively spun our city, they need to know they’re hurting our city, and it was their words that did it.”
Vance, a key communicator for the Trump-Vance campaign, denied responsibility for the unsought attention on Springfield. He dodged answering whether he regrets repeating this rhetoric about Haitian migrants when asked on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” He said he was not responsible for the bomb threats — which he did condemn — when asked about them on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“There was nothing that I have said that has led to threats against these hospitals,” Vance said to CNN’s Dana Bash, adding that the violence is “disgusting.” “We can condemn the violence on the one hand, but also talk about the terrible consequences of Kamala Harris’ open border.”
When given the opportunity to apologize to a family who asked Vance specifically to not talk about their 11-year-old son who was killed in a bus accident involving a Haitian migrant, Vance offered sympathies, but did not apologize.
Vance also cast the blame on the media for ignoring “this stuff until Donald Trump and I started talking about cat memes,” he said. Vance blamed Bash for accusing him of inciting violence when the CNN host asked about Rue’s comments blaming the senator.
“I noticed that when you have Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, you gave them multiple choice answers to the questions that you asked and you allowed them to answer the questions,” Vance said to Bash on CNN. “I’m happy to be here to talk about policy. But if you’re going to interrupt me every single time that I open my mouth, then why am I even doing this?”
Democrats also bashed Vance on Sunday shows for continuing to fuel these rumors and attack the Haitian immigrants that have moved to Springfield. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro called Vance’s comments “bonkers.”
“The governor of Ohio, the mayor of that town in Ohio, has said this is all made up. These are all lies. There’s no truth to it,” Shapiro said in an interview with Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union. “And the United States senator from Ohio just came on your show and blamed his own constituents for his own lies. This guy’s so pathetic, but the thing is, it is dangerous.”
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) lamented Trump’s general attitude about immigration. “Every time he talks about an immigrant, he makes it seem as if they have done something nefarious. And it’s not true. Just because they are immigrants, it doesn’t mean there is anything illegal about them,” she said on MSNBC’s “Inside With Jen Psaki.”
Vance, though, said the threats and fearmongering about the Springfield immigrants are not the point; the key narrative is that immigration overwhelms American communities.
“If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do,” Vance told Bash. When asked to clarify if he just said he was “creating stories,” Vance said the accounts are true but him and Trump were able to create an American media focus around the immigration issue.
He added, “We created the actual focus that allowed the American media to talk about this story and the suffering caused by Kamala Harris’ policies.”

JD Vance says he does not regret spreading baseless rumors of migrants eating pets
Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance said Sunday he did not regret spreading baseless rumors that Haitian immigrants are stealing and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, and that amplifying the claims drew media attention to his and former President Donald Trump's criticisms of U.S. border policies.
"If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people then that's what I'm going to do," Vance told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.
Officials in the small town of Springfield, Ohio have called these accounts untrue and a woman behind a Facebook post that sparked the rumor has since said she did not have firsthand knowledge.
Trump, the GOP White House nominee, brought up the claims during the debate last week with Vice President Kamala, the Democratic nominee. The claim has led to threatening calls and bomb threats in Springfield.
Vance, a U.S. senator from Ohio, dismissed any suggestion that Trump's comments had caused the threats, which led to the evacuation of three schools.
He said he and Trump were standing up for the residents who are worried about the influx of roughly 15,000 Haitians to the town of roughly 58,000 people over the last three years.
"Are we not allowed to talk about these problems because some psychopaths are threatening violence? We can condemn the violence on the one hand, but also talk about the terrible consequences of Kamala Harris's open border on the other hand," Vance said.
"We created the actual focus that allowed the American media to talk about this story and the suffering caused by Kamala Harris' policies," he added.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Sunday denounced claims promoted by Trump, however, calling the rumors "hurtful" and "not helpful."
"There's a lot of garbage on the internet and this is a piece of garbage that was simply not true, there's no evidence of this at all," DeWine, a Republican, told ABC's "This Week."
Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck said there was no evidence of any dogs, cats or other pets being harmed or eaten by Haitian immigrants. Local leaders have credited the city's economic and development rebound in party to the population growth fueled by Haitian immigrants.
"In response to recent rumors alleging criminal activity by the immigrant population in our city, we wish to clarify that there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community," Heck said in a statement.
