The Courage to Obey
After watching Margaret Brennan this morning on Face the Nation my local TV station put on the following Sunday sermon, which shed a lot of light on the true meaning of the phrase "From the River to the Sea".
Today's reading was from the Torah-- the first five books of the OT-- specifically Joshua 1:1-9. Chosen for its timeliness regarding the looming war at Israel's northern borders. It recounts how after the death of Moses, Joshua was ordained by God to carry on the work of creating a Greater Israel (Eretz Israel).
So after Moses leads his people off the desert and subdues the five tribes of the Land of Milk and Honey-- which their God has promised to them-- the task is given to Joshua to cross the Jordan (into what is now Jordan) and subdue the seven tribes living there. And that he must not stop until he has reached the Euphrates. For this is all the Promised Land, which the Lord has covenanted that Israel shall rule.
Not hard to see how this narrative ties in with Christian Dominionism, where the End Times approach as Israel does battle with the forces of the Antichrist, and the Middle East erupts in flames that consume the whole world. Then Jesus comes down to save all the select who follow Him... transporting them directly to Heaven as the rest of us are all consumed in the everlasting flames below.
