Introduction by dmorista: Mearsheimer discusses his views on what is happening and why in Ukraine, the Middle East (Israel and Gaza), and East Asia. He puts it in the context of his well-known Realist School of thought in International Relations. He also discusses the role of Liberalism, and the belief in Liberalism in The West, and how that has created a “Crusader Mentality” in The West.
Mearsheimer is a person who at least tries to analyze global events honestly. He is not a Leftist but was mentioned specifically for his honest analysis by Perry Anderson in his major work in the New Left Review, v. 83 Sep/Oct 2013 (as well as a follow up book also published in 2013, American Foreign Policy and Its Thinkers).
Anderson wrote two articles that pretty much filled that special issue of the New Left Review. Those articles were “Imperium” and “Consilium” and I believe he mentioned Mearsheimer in “Consilium”. Anderson compared Mearsheimer's honesty and attempt to be impartial to the more rabid and blatantly pro-Imperialist writings of such thinkers as Brzezinski, Mead, Kagan, Fukuyama, Mandelbaum, Ikenberry, and Art.
Anyhow, Mearsheimer, in this interview, talks about many vital issues of our current day. He is particularly harsh in his statements about Israel in that he says, clarifying his thoughts in the discussion with Gita Wirjawan, that the Zionist founders of Israel clearly planned to massacre many Palestinians while ethnically cleansing the lands, that was inhabited by Palestinians, that they wanted for a Jewish State. This discussion takes place from about 37:46 to 42:29 in the interview.
