Introduction by dmorista: The pace of world events seems to be speeding up. In the first youtube video the 3 discussants look at the wide ranging problems now faced by the U.S. military as it is used by the U.S. Ruling-class to implement their agenda. Mearsheimer notes that as of Oct 6, 2023 the U.S. military thought they had to contend with the ongoing war proxy in Ukraine and building up for a possible confrontation with China over Taiwan and issues in the South China Sea. All this changed after the latest and very serious flare-up of hostilities in Israel. The Israelis, famous for their extensive contacts in the U.S. and their influence of the U.S. political scene and policy making apparatus, cast a huge shadow over the continued vigorous prosecution of the Ukraine Proxy War and of the again frustrated and postponed U.S. Pivot to Asia. Glenn Diesen, a Norwegian political scientist who is sympathetic to the Russian position and Alexander Mercouris, a strident critic of the U.S. (and right wing sympathizer) also add their contributions. All three, not too surprisingly, think that the U.S. now faces more crises and conficts than it can manage successfully.
In the second video Mearsheimer is interviewed by Jeffrey Sachs. The most important issue Mearsheimer discusses is the nearly universal belief, among politicians and policy makers in the West, that Vladimir Putin is an irrational madman who wants to reestablish the Russian Empire of the Czars; and to do so by conquering huge areas in Ukraine, Poland and other regions in Eastern Europe. Mearsheimer wrote a recent book, in collaboration with Sebastian Rosato entitled, How States Think: The Rationality of Foreign Policy. They examined 14 cases of how decisions were taken by elites and inthe interview Mearsheimer opines that the process in Russia falls well within the norm. The reality is that Putin's decision making process, and that followed by U.S. elites, both fall within the same basic parameters. The opinion of the population is not considered at all, but after the decisions are taken propaganda and disinformation teams work to convince enough of the population of the “nobility” of the course of action taken to make it possible to pursue the agenda of the rulers.
Mearsheimer is a well-known International Relations and Political Scientist who is an advocate of the Realist School. He does not think that the U.S. ruling class, or any other nation's ruling class wear "White Hats" and have noble intentions.
