Introduction by dmorista:
John Pilger looks at the situation in Ukraine in a couple of ways that we will never see from the Propaganda and Disinformation operations of the Corporate Controlled Media. In the first part of the article he points out the total lack of any dissenting voices in the Corporate Controlled Media. This was not the case even 20 years ago when, amidst the heavily promoted Official Story, on anything from the numerous political assissinations of the 1960s, to the phonied up Tonkin Gulf attacks, even up to the fishy events of September 11, 2001 in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania some dissent was tolerated in the Corporate Controlled Media, but this is according to Pilger no longer the case.
John Judge, who sadly died a couple of years ago, used to work with Mae Brussel in examining about 100 major and minor newspapers, all the important news magazines, and the main TV and Radio broadcasts. They found that they could glean a large amount of serious information doing this and could analyze events and sometimes make predictions based on a thorough analysis of Corporate Controlled Media material. In fact Brussel even predicted the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and the neutralization of Teddy Kennedy in the Chappaquidick incident. She predicted both of these events over 2 weeks ahead of time, and sent detailed letters to Rose Kennedy warning her about what she had learned from that exercise in news analysis. Judge stated in various speeches and interviews that the Corporate Controlled Media had gotten so bad and was now so controlled that it was no longer worth the effort to do what he and Brussel used to in scanning and analyzing the Corporate Controlled Media news material.
In the second part of the article Pilger recounts some of the outrageous violence used against Russian speakers in Eastern and Southern Ukraine after the 2014 Coup. He points out that:
“Vladimir Putin refers to the 'genocide' in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine. Following the coup in Ukraine in 2014 – orchestrated by Barack Obama’s 'point person' in Kyiv, Victoria Nuland – the coup regime, infested with neo-Nazis, launched a campaign of terror against Russian-speaking Donbas, which accounts for a third of Ukraine’s population.
“Overseen by CIA director John Brennan in Kyiv, 'special security' units coordinated savage attacks on the people of Donbas, who opposed the coup. Video and eyewitness reports show bussed fascist thugs burning the trade union headquarters in the city of Odessa, killing 41 people trapped inside. The police are standing by. Obama congratulated the 'duly elected' coup regime for its 'remarkable restraint'.
“In the US media, the Odessa atrocity was played down as 'murky' and a 'tragedy' in which 'nationalists' (neo-Nazis) attacked 'separatists' (people collecting signatures for a referendum on a federal Ukraine). Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal damned the victims – 'Deadly Ukraine Fire Likely Sparked by Rebels, Government Says' ”.
There is a major ongoing attempt to portray the Ukraine Coup Government as a totally legitimate and enlightened regime. It is important to point out to readers and the general public that this is not the case. The Ukrainian Government still in power is directly descended from a Coup d'etat that took place in 2014 with the support and connivance of the U.S. and some elements from countries in Western Europe, as well as from Israel (“the usua suspects” in other words). Yes it is certainly not a good development that the Russians finally invaded Ukraine, but what is more remarkable is the nearly limitless restraint with which the Russian state and military used for the many provocative actions of NATO and the U.S. in Eastern Europe, including Ukraine. Not to even mention the Russian response to events in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. What has happened is that Russia has recovered to some extent from the low point it reached in the aftermath of the collapse of the U.S.S.R., and has become more assertive. Meanwhile the U.S. has been seriously weakened by the 20 year-long Global War on Terror, the looting of the common wealth and the Federal Government by the Finance Capitalists, and the serious and obvious level of division inside American society. These things have consequences.
