Introduction by dmorista:
This is a fine and very informative talk by NYU Sociology Professor, and major figure in the New York City Left, Vivek Chibber. Chibber works closely with the editorial staff of the leftist journal Jacobin and he also serves as the editor of another leftist journal Catalyst. He is endlessly generous with his time and gives many talks and participates in the intellectual life of the Left in New York City.
In this particular Talk, “Vivek Chibber on Marxism and Imperialism in the 21st century”, about the first half of the hour and 41 minute video is his talk, and the rest is devoted to a question and answer period. Chibber takes the view that the acquisition of colonies actually slowed down the development of Capitalism. He disagrees with the view that “unequal exchanges” played a pivotal role in the enrichment of the core capitalist countries. Chibber thinks that capitalist countries generated their own wealth by internal investment and the development of internal markets and in trade with other rich core economies. He sees the development of Empires as incidental to Capitalist development and as the work of factions within the Capitalist Class of the core Capitalist Countries. He argues that only certain well placed factions of the Capitalists gained economically from colonial operations; and that overall colonialism weakened the economic structure of the various Core Capitalist Countries that actually administered colonial empires. He even says at one point near the end of this video, that the World Systems Theorists have damaged Marxist analysis and the left and its understanding of the relationships between the rich core countries and "The Global South".
