This may be a strange subject for someone who runs a blog like this, but I often question the kind of debate we have here.  It is kind of an existential question.  Why do it?  Often we are conversing with people whose minds are made up and closed like steel traps, and whose fundamental values (or lack thereof) conflict with our own.  

Quasim tackles this question - his rationale is what he calls Collateral Education.  Basicallyit is the idea that you aren't really talking to the individual on the other computer, but instead you are talking to the silent majority who are listening, who are interested in what we have to say, and who could use some clarity in their thoughts and arguments.  I think that he has something there.  So listen to how he approaches discussion as Collateral Education.
